Despite being beaten by Russia in the 5th & 6th place playoffs, The IBSA B2/B3 World Football Championships ended on a high note for the IBS footballers, as they defeated Italy in the 7th & 8th place play-off in Buenos Aires on Saturday. Ireland always struggled against the technically superior Russians, but still battled valiantly before losing out 7-4; the Irish goals scored by Paddy Coates, John Gaughan, Warren McDonald & Ciaran O’Brien. Ireland were determined to give their best performance in the final match (playoff for 7th & 8th place), but were rocked by Italy who took the lead early on. Their response was impressive with goals coming from Paddy Coates (2), Ciaran O’Brien and Gerard Prendergast, as Ireland ran out comfortable 4-1 winners. We can all feel proud of Robert, Tommy and the IBS Ireland footballers, when they return to Dublin today, ranked number 7 in the World.

For the record, Ukraine beat Belarus 3-2 on penalties in the final (after extra time) to become World Champions. England’s tremendous run continued when they defeated hosts Argentina on penalties, following a thrilling 5-5 draw, to take third place.
