Silver for Catherine Walsh and Caroline Ryan
August 2009
As the Irish cycling squad continues its preparations for the UCI Para-Cycling World Championships later this year, the team continues to stride forward. The Irish team's latest event was the International Para-Cycling Cup Road Race and Time Trial in Piacenza, Italy. The team of six athletes and three staff travelled for the event which was supported by the majority of major cycling nations worldwide. The athletes included IBS cyclists Catherine Walsh and her pilot Caroline Ryan, along with Michael Delaney and his pilot Con Collis, plus Cathal Miller and Enda Smyth.
The highlight from an Irish perspective was Catherine and Caroline's thrilling ride, winning silver but almost winning gold in a tough battle against their German rivals, who pipped them at the last. However, the PCI Cycling Manager is confident that this pairing has the potential to win a medal later this year in the World Championships - a tremendous performance from both girls.
There was more Irish success in Italy when Cathal Miller won the bronze medal in the individual time trial.
Ireland's other two riders also had encouraging performances, especially on the track, with Smyth finishing 5th in the time trial with the tandem pair of Delaney and Collis finishing in 7th position.
