December 2009

Irish Blind Golf Society Captain’s Prize was held at Royal Dublin G.C. over a 9 Hole Competition on November 20th, 2009. This memorable day, not only for the golf in this most exquisite setting, but for the fine weather during the worst November on record, the gastronomic delights served up afterwards and the captains speech, will linger long in the memory of those present. Some fine performances were recorded. No less than three players shared second place on 16 points. Wally Roode set the pace with a blistering 16 points over the first seven holes, but crashed over the last two scoring no points at all. Paul O’Rahilly and Adrian Canny put in steady performances but lacked sparkle. However, Peter Gorey stepped up to the mark over the difficult closing holes, carding three pars in the last five holes to score 17 points, with a gross score of 44.

This is the first time the society has organised a Captain’s Prize. Ian Corr is this year’s captain. Before awarding his prize and the prize to the years Champion Golfer, he made a short speech. He complemented the efforts of Jimmy “the cat” Murray over the years, he thanked the guides who he described as “the extra club in the bag”. Paddy Higgins, Ian’s own guide (and a member of Royal Dublin) was thanked and recognised for his help and support organising the captain’s day at this prestigious venue. Ian recognised the importance of the recent trip to Cork and the staging of the tryout day in Lee Valley GC, regretting his own absence. Other remarks were directed, with much sensitivity, at Paul “the kitten” O’Rahilly!

Wally Roode was awarded the perpetual trophy as champion golfer for 2009.
