Swimming News

November 2009

The Paralympic Swimming Team went to Iceland at the end of October to compete in the European Championships. Stephen Campbell from Co. Tyrone competed in the 400m Freestyle event (S11 Class) finishing 5th in the final with a seasons best time of 5.33.21. He just missed out on a PB time in the 50m Freestyle, finishing with a time of 30.50 seconds and just missed getting to the final.

In the 100m Backstroke event he showed his talent with a 5th place finish with a new Irish record time of 1.15.92 after a close race for third place.

Stephen set a new Irish record of 67.14 in finishing in 7th place for the 100m Freestyle event, taking 0.06 seconds off his previous mark. He is quoted as saying it was “A great way to finish the meet for me, a new PB and I have really enjoyed swimming the final tonight”.

For Ireland, it has been an extremely successful European Championship competition with 2 Silver medals, 14 finals and 14 personal best performances.
