FootballJune 2010The Ireland B2/3 5 a side Football team recently missed out on the May Games due to their commitments to attending the Four Nations Partially Sighted Tournament at Royal National College for the Blind, Hereford held on 4-6th June. This was a quadrangular competition between Ireland, England Spain and a British Blind Sports, National Visually Impaired League team. Ireland opened the competition with a win over England. At half time they were 2-1 up and extended this further in the second half for a comfortable win in the end. Ireland next met Spain who beat us 3-2 despite Ireland leading 2-0 at one point. All 5 goals came in the 2nd half. The third outing by Ireland was against a British Blind Sports, National Visually Impaired League team who we beat 6-4 to get into the final on the Sunday afternoon. Ireland played England in the Final and had them on the rack for most of the games having gone ahead straight from kick off with a goal in the first minute from Ireland Gerard Prendergast. The first half was a tight and edgy affair with the Irish defence allowing them lead 1-0 at half time. With only five minutes to go Kevin Price poked a shot home to level the match but the drama was far from over. With only three minutes left on the clock England managed to find another gap in the Irish defence and Danny Gauden struck the winning goal. While England were jubilant the Irish team were bitterly disappointed by the result as they felt they had played the better football for most of the match.
