Competitors line up for the start of their race at the May Games

Disappointing weather failed to dampen the spirits of those who turned out to enjoy the competition and comradeship that was evident at this years May Games. The day got off to a damp start in Santry stadium with a short opening ceremony that was driven into the stand by the rain. Fred Cogley, President of Irish Blindsports, spoke to the athletes prior to the various sports being introduced. Thereafter the athletics and rowing events took place in Santry while the bowling and cycling people headed to their competitions. The track and field saw some great performances and the return of a few old faces too, greyer of hair but non the less competitive as ever. It was great to see so many old friends around and even the weather was like the old days – all the more reason to slide in to Ann and Jimmy Kelly for a warm cuppa. The programme this year also included some events for sitting throwers in the field events.

The rowing took place on the indoor track under the supervision of Martin Corcoran and Aron O’Dowd who cajoled and assisted all who took part in this new sport.

The bowling had the biggest turnout of athletes and when they eventually managed to get the bus out of the carpark competition got under way in earnest. It was great to see the prizes going to the different groups around the country and a only a small few over the sea. Overall performances were excellent and competition was fierce which is very heartening. Thanks to the Harding Family for all the efforts and assistance in running this part of the programme.

The cycling took to the road with some of the paralympic athletes present and 10 tandems or so fighting it our on the roads around the airport area. There was general agreement that the weather had not disrupted things too much and good competitive cycling was enjoyed at all levels.

The day was rounded off by an enjoyable evening of good company, renewing old friendships, music, food and a few drinks. All the reports were positive and congratulations to all who won spot prizes, helped with the raffle and in any other way with the success of the evening. Congratulations to Tony Guest for his ascension to being the first member of the Hall of Fame, to Sr. Brid Smith and her guide Alexi Diamantopoulos as Tandem Cyclist of the Games and to Amanda Crotty who was selected as Athlete of the Games with 2 new PBs on the track.

Thanks to everyone who made this 30th May Games such an event to be remembered. Thanks to Kate Dobbyn our main event organizer, to Ann Lyster, Joe Geraghty and Pat Kelly for their assistance on the day and in the preparations for the day, to all our volunteer helps from Mount Anville School, to all our officials and to all of you who attended.
