Sporting Chance Programme

May 2010

Kevin Smith, Coordinator of the Sporting Chance Programme, at National Learning Network in Tralee is anxious to introduce the Sporting Chance Programme to people with a visual impairment. It is aimed towards providing disabled people with the qualifications and skills required to pursue a career in the sports and leisure industry. They are currently accepting applications from interested people.

To date participants have progressed to a wide range of careers including Soccer Coaching, Swim Teaching, Gym Instructors; Go for Life Instructor and Sports Masseur. In addition, the course has proven to be a gateway to third level education, with seven students progressing to sport and leisure courses in Waterford Tralee I.T.

The course covers a wide range of modules and qualifications and a range of FETAC certification at levels 4 and 5. There is also a very strong practical element where participants have an opportunity to develop their coaching and instructional skills in a variety of sports and exercise classes.

Sporting Chance caters for a cross disability sector and provides an individual action planning approach, thus ensuring the course is tailored towards the specific needs of each individual. The programme has catered for a number of people with vision impairments through the provision of assistive technology such as JAWS, Zoomtext and Kurzweil. This is an ideal opportunity to gain the qualifications and skills required to pursue a career in the sport and leisure industry. No course fees apply and the course is run on a continuous intake basis so we are open for applications at any time.
