Goalball
Goalball is a game designed specifically and exclusively for visually impaired and blind people; but it can be played by sighted individuals if they too wear black out goggles. Goalball competitions have a unique atmosphere inside the playing venue as quietness is a crucial factor in allowing the players to locate and follow the course of the ball. Complete silence is required throughout the venue to allow the players to concentrate and react instantly to the ball. It is played on an indoor court which is the same size as a volleyball court – 18 metres long by 9 metres wide. The game uses a ball, a goalball, which has a bell(s) inside it and makes a noise as it rolls. This allows the players to determine the speed and direction of travel of the ball. Each team (consisting of up to 6 players) has 3 players on the court at any one time. The main aim of the game for the team is for one of their members to throw the 1.25 kg. goalball from one end of the court (just in front of their own goal) toward, and into, the other team’s goal. The defending team must do all they can to prevent this from occurring. Rules that stipulate where the ball must touch the floor ensure that it is generally skimmed across the floor rather than up into the air. Each game is divided into two halves – each of 10 minutes playing time. Naturally, the team that scores the most goals is declared the winner. Goalball is played by both male and female athletes with a visual impairment and is suitable for children. Invented in 1946 the game was admitted to the Paralympic games in 1976. Goalball is good means of improving balance + co-ordination, and requires strength, agility and endurance. Goalball uniquely has:
