CampAbilities - A Recipe for Happy Children

Chef Nadine Latimore Cooks Up a Great Story on a great Week in Killarney

Easter mid term break from school brought a special treat for those involved with CampAbilities

Ingredients
3 dozen enthusiastic vision impaired youngsters (sugar free usually works best)
Plethora of buddy system pals (added energy if available)
non stop organised fun and games (CARA Adapted Physical Activity Centre Ltd and the Institute of Technology Tralee in association with the National Council for the Blind, the National Learning Network Tralee (Sporting Chance Programme) and of course Irish Blind Sports)

Directions
Introduce youngsters and buddies and combine well.
Gradually add team activities until confidence is noticeable, sprinkle in some fancy dress, bouncy castles and general shenanigans. Pour in some brief rays of sun shine and a few rice krispies. Stir in fun challenging activities (additional leaders required at this stage) and turn up the heat. Include drum circle, guests involved in Paralympic sports and other inventive zesty routines. Decorate as required – ENJOY!

From Monday 2nd until 6th April the 3rd CampAbilities Ireland Camp was held in Killarney, Co.Kerry. The beautiful An Óige Youth Hostel of Fossa – an impressive 18th century mansion on 77 acres of beautiful gardens and forests was literally taken over by fun and laughter. Having been invited to speak about my life as an athlete heading towards the London Games qualifications, I was delighted to join in with the Athletics activity and give some top tips to our budding athletes. Across all of the sports sampled over the week, there were some outstanding performances, although more significantly a passion for sporting participation has been ignited. Alongside the friendships forged and memories made from a wonderful week at camp, of course the universal message that sport is accessible to all, no matter what level of vision or other disability. Fantastic camp – hope to see you all there next year!
