Water Skiing
Water-skiing is an adrenalin boosting water based activity which can be undertaken by visually impaired and blind people who want to experience the thrills and spills of this high speed water based sport – just like their sighted peers. With some basic training which uses some minor adaptations to facilitate the learning of the skills necessary, a visually impaired person can be up and skiing as good as the next person in a very short time. A fixed boom attached directly to the motor boat may be used to keep close contact with the boat driver and/or the instructor as one learns to stand up on the skis while moving. Similarly, a bit further away behind with motor boat a double or triple bar allows the visually impaired person to have either one or two guides beside them as they learn to ride the waves. As they become more comfortable on the water, skiers with a little more experience can ski alone using a technique of whistles or rope taps to know when to cross the wake or return to the centre and eventually progress to the high speed freedom of the mono-ski. Waterskiing is a way to experience the hi-octane thrills of a fast and exciting water sport. This is a sport that can take place on a lake, river or the sea. At Irish blind Sports we have collaborated with Carrig Waterski Club, near Macroom, in Cork to provide training and experience in waterskiing. Excellent instructors, who have chosen to take a particular interest in teaching water-skiing to blind and visually impaired people, have built up a wealth of experience over the last ten years and will be there to help you master the sport. You don’t need to be a fitness fanatic to take part and enjoy it. It’s a recreational sport for all the family so male and female of all ages can be catered for. You don’t need to be able to swim as you will be wearing a lifejacket and wetsuit at all times on the water but ideally should feel confident about being in the water.
